The U.S. Department of Justice appointed its first AI-focused official on Thursday local time (today) -- Jonathan Mayer, a Princeton professor who studies technology and the law, will serve as chief technology advisor, chief AI officer, Reuters reports. Jonathan Mayer will lead a newly created Council of Law Enforcement and Civil Rights Officials, which will advise the attorney general and others on the ethics and effectiveness of AI systems and work to recruit more technologists to the department.
