AI can help power plants capture carbon dioxide, reducing electricity consumption by 36%, study shows
Recently, scientists at the University of Surrey in the UK have successfully adapted a coal-fired power plant system through artificial intelligence techniques, achieving the remarkable result of capturing more carbon dioxide (CO2) while reducing electricity consumption by 36.31 TP3T. The key to this research was the scientists' use of a model predictive control approach that allowed the system to make real-time adjustments in response to changes in the external environment. Compared to conventional carbon capture systems, the model can reduce the amount of water pumped when CO2 supply decreases or renewable energy is in short supply, resulting in greater energy savings while capturing carbon emissions.
