According to The Verge, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently said in an internal all-hands meeting that DeepSeek's R1 model has become a new benchmark for Microsoft's AI development. In particular, Nadella emphasized the efficient operation of the DeepSeek team: "What's most impressive about DeepSeek is that it shows what a team of 200 people working together can accomplish. What's more, they didn't just stop at a research project or an open source project, they built it into the #1 product in the app store. That's the new standard in my mind." In contrast, Microsoft's Copilot app has yet to achieve the same level of success, the report notes. Despite being able to use OpenAI's latest models, investing heavily in publicity, and making design updates to Copilot that include voice and visual features, it typically doesn't even rank among the top 100 apps. For this reason, Nadella is looking to improve its market position through Microsoft's own AI research and development, rather than relying solely on OpenAI.
