Liu Cixin says DeepSeek is unlikely to replace sci-fi writers for now, but the future is entirely possible in theory

On March 30th, 2025 China Science Fiction Convention was recently held in Beijing, with the theme of "Science Dreams Creating the Future". In the forum of the conference, science fiction writer Liu Cixin talked about the drive and development of DeepSeek on science fiction literature. According to CCTV Finance, on the question of whether DeepSeek is likely to replace science fiction writers in the future, Liu Cixin said that it would be unlikely for the time being, but after 10 or 20 years, it is theoretically possible to replace science fiction writers. Liu Cixin believes that from a scientific point of view, there is nothing in all human writers that cannot be replaced by AI. When talking about how to deal with this situation, Liu Cixin said, "I personally believe that we should first stop reassuring ourselves and frankly face the impact of the technology and the devastating effect it has on our field. Liu Cixin expressed a pessimistic attitude towards the creation of science fiction literature under contemporary AI "People often say that AI does not have human souls and human feelings, which is nothing but a self-congratulation. The soul and feelings of human beings emerge from the connection of many neuron cells into a complex system," he said. He believes that "the future of science fiction writers will not completely disappear, but will be reduced to non-mainstream, similar to the current shadow theater, people's science fiction creations will always be there, but he will not become the kind of mainstream content that has always been in the spotlight."
