OpenAI upgraded ChatGPT's text-to-picture function to the GPT-4o model on March 25, claiming to be able to more accurately generate pictures based on users' text commands, and to quickly convert user-uploaded images into manga, anime, and other styles. The corresponding function triggered a trend of "AI generating Studio Ghibli-style images" on overseas social media, with many people trying to convert their selfies into the corresponding style, and even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman changing his X platform avatar to a "Ghibli version" at one point. However, the overwhelming demand for the feature put a huge strain on OpenAI's resources, prompting CEO Sam Altman to urge users to slow down, posting a message urging that "the demand is crazy and our team needs to sleep." On March 30th, due to copyright disputes over the large number of similarly styled images generated by users, as well as a surge in server pressure, OpenAI announced that it was limiting the rate of ChatGPT text-generated images and prohibiting the direct generation of Ghibli-style images via cue words. In addition, the GPT-4o image generation function originally planned to be opened to free users has also been postponed due to high demand, the specific time has not been determined.
