TikTok will identify and label third-party AI-generated content

Short video platform TikTok is stepping up its initiatives to recognize and label artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content. TikTok will also identify and label AI content generated by other platforms, following up on existing features that automatically identify and label content created using TikTok's own AI tools.

This new feature is made possible by TikTok's partnership with Adobe, a leading software company that has developed a tagging system called Content Credentials, which can be embedded in the metadata of an image or video to indicate that the content has been processed by AI. Content Credentials are now supported by a variety of Adobe software, including Photoshop and Firefly.

TikTok says they will implement this feature in phases. The first step is to automatically recognize and flag uploaded content that already contains "content credentials". This means that even if a creator uses an AI tool from a third-party platform, TikTok will be able to recognize and label their uploaded video or image as "AI-generated content" as long as it contains "content credentials".

TikTok will then also add tags to content created using AI special effects within the platform, and the tags will remain even if that content is downloaded and published to other platforms.
