According to 404Media,appleAlready from App Store The company has removed three apps that were marketed as "art generators" and advertised on Instagram and adult websites as being able to "take off any girl's clothes for free."
These apps use artificial intelligence to generate fake nude images, and while the images do not show actual nudity, these apps can generate images that could be used for harassment, blackmail, and privacy violations.
Worryingly, Apple’s response came only after 404Media shared the apps and their ad links, which have been available on the App Store since 2022 and advertise “strip” features on adult websites.
The report also states that the apps were initially allowed on the App Store if they removed ads from adult websites. However, Google did not remove one of the apps from the Play Store until 2024.
Now, Apple has finally decided to remove these apps from the App Store. However, what is slightly worrying is that this incident reveals the passive nature of App Store review and the potential for developers to exploit loopholes.
The incident comes at a sensitive time as Apple is about to hold its 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference, where it is expected to make major AI announcements about iOS 18 and Siri. Apple has been committed to building a reputation for responsible AI development and has even gone so far as to specialize in purchasing ethically licensed training data.
