Generative AI is becoming Meta The company's new money-making focus, but CEO MarkZuckerbergAdmittedly, the technology is not yet able to generate profits quickly.
Posted on WednesdayFirstZuckerberg delivered the message to investors during a quarterly earnings call. While Meta has already deployed its ChatGPT competitor on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, much of the discussion focused on how generative AI could be a new revenue source for the company.
Zuckerberg said building leading-edge AI systems would be a bigger undertaking than adding new features to apps in the past and could take years, but he was optimistic about generative AI's potential to improve ad quality and user engagement.
Zuckerberg also touted Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses, saying the devices are already sold out in multiple styles and colors and praising recent improvements in their multimodal artificial intelligence capabilities.
Although Meta is investing more than ever in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence and virtual universes, the company is still struggling to maintain profitability in its core business. Zuckerberg said that it may take a few years for generative AI to become a real money-making project, but he believes that the technology will eventually become an important source of revenue for Meta.
