SAG-AFTRA, the union representing actors, musicians and other artists, has signed a deal with several majorRecord CompanyAn agreement was signed to put safeguards in place when record labels use artificial intelligence in songs.
Warner MusicSAG-AFTRA, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Disney Music Group said on Monday that they have signed a preliminary multi-year agreement to increase performer royalties, improve insurance access and align interests in artificial intelligence. The five-year agreement, from 2021 to 2026, will serve as a framework for how artificial intelligence can and cannot be used in the music industry.
Under the terms of the proposed deal, record labels agree that anyone designated as an artist, vocalist or royalty artist must be human. Labels must also obtain “clear and conspicuous consent” and provide detailed information about how the artist’s voice will be used and how much they will be paid before they can create AI-generated songs using their voices.
Artificial intelligence has quickly become a hot topic in Hollywood and across the music industry, with artists deeply concerned that studios and record labels might create AI versions of themselves to create new work without adequate compensation.
Artificial intelligence was one of the main issues SAG-AFTRA was arguing with movie studios during its months-long strike in 2023. While the details of how AI will be used (or not used) in movies are still to be fully worked out, SAG-AFTRA has made it clear that AI is a topic it won’t budge on.
