Poe introduces per-message pricing revenue model for AI chatbot creators

AI bot creators now have a new way to make money, Quora's AI Chatbotplatform Poe Poe launched a revenue model that allows creators to set a per-message price for their bots so they can earn money when users send them messages. The company launched a revenue-sharing program in October 2023, giving bot creators a share of the revenue generated by paying users who subscribe to Poe.

Poe introduces per-message pricing revenue model for AI chatbot creators

Originally launched by Quora in February 2023, Poe offers users the ability to try out a variety of AI chatbots, including ChatGPT maker OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and more. The aim is to provide consumers with a way to easily experience new AI technologies on one platform, while also providing Quora with a potential source of new content.

The company’s revenue model offers creators a new way to reward AI enthusiasts who build “prompt bots,” as well as developer-built server bots that integrate with Poe’s AI.

Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo explained on Monday that Poe users will only see the number of message credits for each bot, which includes the credits they have as a free user or a Poe subscriber. However, he said creators will be paid in U.S. dollars.

“This pricing mechanism is important for developers who have significant model inference or API costs,” D’Angelo said in a post on X. “Our goal is to incentivize a thriving ecosystem of model developers and bot creators, and covering operational costs is a key part of that,” he added.

New revenue models could drive the development of new types of bots, including in areas such as coaching, knowledge, assistant, analysis, storytelling and image generation, D’Angelo believes.

This revenue model is currently only available to bot creators in the United States, but will expand globally in the future. It works with creators who subscribe to PoE for their bots.HighestLaunched with a $20 creator monetization program.

In addition to the per-message revenue model, Poe is launching an enhanced analytics dashboard showing a creator’s average bot revenue across paywalls, subscriptions, and messages. Its insights, updated daily, will allow creators to better understand how their pricing drives bot usage and revenue.
