According to Bloomberg, the U.S. Office of Management and Budget issued a directive today (local time) requiring federal agencies to monitor, evaluate and test the impact of artificial intelligence on the public.Mitigating the risks of algorithmic discrimination and privacy violations,and increase transparency in the government’s use of AI technology.

Agencies must also establish AI governance committees and set up “Chief Artificial Intelligence OfficerThe position of Chief AI Officer (CAIO) will be responsible for coordinating the use of AI across government departments, while also conducting risk assessments and setting operational and governance indicators. Agencies must also submit annual reports to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).List all AI systems it uses, any risks associated with them, and how it plans to mitigate those risks.
White HouseThe agency said that “agencies using AI in ways that could impact the rights or safety of Americans will be required to implement specific safeguards by December 1,” including detailed public disclosures so the public knows how and when the government is using AI.
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris told reporters that the CAIO candidate needs to have the experience, expertise and authority to oversee all artificial intelligence technologies used by agencies.The move is to ensure AI is used responsibly.
In February this year, the U.S. Department of Justice appointed its first chief AI Officer —— Jonathan Meyer, a Princeton University professor who studies technology and lawJonathan Mayer will lead a new commission of law enforcement and civil rights officials.The commission will advise the attorney general and others on the ethics and effectiveness of AI systems, and work hard to recruit more technical experts to join the department.
