OpenAI In an interview with Lex Fridman released Monday, CEO Sam Altman said that his company's AI model, GPT-4, was "kinda sucks," and that Altman was more excited about the upcoming GPT-5 Being able to truly deserve the anticipation.
"I think it kind of sucks," Altman said when asked about the GPT-4 and its most impressive capabilities, "Looking ahead to the next few years, we should realize that the tools we have now will look very outdated in the future, and that's exactly what spurs us on to keep getting better and creating a better future."
"Don't get me wrong, I don't want to either downplay the accomplishments of GPT-4 or exaggerate them," Altman said, "Just because we're on an exponential growth curve, soon we'll be looking at GPT-4 as we look at GPT-3 now."
Altman sees "glimpses of brilliance" in GPT-4, but notes that its best use is usually as a brainstorming partner, and that ChatGPT is of little use when dealing with complex multi-step problems. When it does work, the feeling is magical, but that is rare.
Altman also noted that they will be launching this yearNew Model, not GPT-5, though he did not specify its name, except to say that there are other important things that need to be rolled out before GPT-5.
The "kinda bad" GPT-4 model has reportedly pushed OpenAI to 100 million users per week and an $80 billion valuation.
