Italy's data protection authority (Garante) announced on Friday that it had filed a complaint against Microsoft-backed OpenAI The company developed a service called Sora The service can generate videos based on text prompts.
The regulator asked OpenAI to clarify whether the way it informed users and non-users about the data used by its product Sora complied with EU regulations. OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Italy's data regulator is one of the most active regulators in the EU and has been committed to evaluating whether artificial intelligence platforms comply with EU data privacy regulations. Last year, the agency banned the use of the chatbot ChatGPT in Italy on the grounds of suspected illegal use of user data.
The Italian data protection authority did not bring any specific charges against OpenAI, but said it was investigating the impact that the Sora service may have on the use of personal data in the EU and Italy. The investigation includes: how the algorithm of the Sora service is trained, what data is collected and used during the training process, and whether the service has been provided to users in the EU and Italy.
