Meta invests in AI to drive video recommendations, integrating Feed and Reels

Facebook parent companyMetais investing heavily in artificial intelligence technology as part of its "Technology Roadmap to 2026" to develop newArtificial Intelligence Recommendation ModelRecommend all of its video products, including its TikTok-like Reels short video service and Facebook FeedTraditional long videos in.

Meta executive Tom Alison revealed that the company currently typically uses separate recommendation models for each product such as Reels, Groups, and the main feed, but will develop a unified large-scale model across product services in the future.

FirstThe stage is to migrate the existing recommendation system from traditional chips toGPUThe second phase was to build this new "model architecture" last year, which has been tested on Reels, helping to increase the viewing time of Reels on Facebook's core app from 8% to 10%.

Alison said Meta was shocked by the ability of such large-scale artificial intelligence models to "handle large amounts of data and tasks." Therefore, in the third phase, Meta will work hard to verify and promote this technology, using a single model to serve the entire video ecosystem and even feed recommendations.

"These recommendations will be more engaging, more relevant, and more responsive," Alison said. If you see something interesting in Reels, you'll see more similar recommendations when you return to your feed.

Meta has purchased a large number of GPUs to support broader AI work, such as developing digital assistants. Some plans include integrating complex chat tools into feeds, allowing users to ask AI assistants questions about a tweet topic; or allowing group members to ask AI assistants questions related to the topic.

"We have an opportunity to put generative AI in a multi-person consumption environment," Alison said.
