The 2022 U.S. ban prevented Nvidia and AMD from selling their most powerful AI chips to China, forcing them to look for new solutions. Nvidia immediately launched a modified model with reduced performance, while AMD has not publicly discussed its efforts to develop new AI chips for the Chinese market.
AMD has a lower position in China's artificial intelligence chip market relative to Nvidia, which held the majority of that market before the ban took effect. Although AMD said it did not expect to be seriously affected when the ban takes effect in 2022, it is now moving more aggressively into the market.
In December, the company launched its new MI300 series, designed to compete with Nvidia's products, while the product specifically for the Chinese market is called MI309. It is not clear which Chinese customer is trying to buy AMD's artificial intelligence chips, but this factor may affect whether the company will proceed with the license application.
Meanwhile, Huawei is actively developing its own artificial intelligence chips and chip manufacturing capabilities, which could help the Chinese company fill the gap created by the US ban.
