OpenAI targets ChatGPT The new read-aloud feature, Read Aloud, is now available on the web version of ChatGPT and the iOS and Android ChatGPT apps.
Read Aloud can speak 37 languages, but automatically detects the language of the text it’s reading, and the feature works with both GPT-4 and GPT-3.5. It’s an interesting example of what OpenAI can achieve with multimodal capabilities (the ability to read and respond through multiple mediums), and it was revealed shortly after competitor Anthropic added similar capabilities to its AI models.
ChatGPT launched a voice chat feature in September 2023, which allows users to directly ask the chatbot prompts without typing. Now the new feature will allow people to have ChatGPT read the generated written answers aloud, and users can set the chatbot to always respond verbally when responding to prompts.
On the mobile app, people can tap and hold on the text to open the read-aloud player, where they can play, pause or rewind the content. The web version shows a speaker icon below the text.
