Nvidia Chief Executive OfficerJen-Hsun Huangsaid Friday that by some definitions, AI is universally intelligent (AGI) could be realized within five years. Jen-Hsun Huang is the world's leading maker of artificial intelligence chips used to create systems like OpenAI's ChatGPT.
At an economic forum held at Stanford University, he answered a question about how long it would take to achieve the long-term goal of a computer that thinks like a human. The answer, Jen-Hsun Huang said, depends a lot on the definition of the goal. If the definition is to be able to pass human tests, Jen-Hsun Huang said that the universal intelligence of AI will be realized soon.
He said, "If I gave AI... . every test you can think of, and you put the list of tests in front of the computer science industry, my guess is that in five years' time we'll be performing well on every one of them." As of now, AI can pass tests such as law exams, but still struggles with specialized medical tests such as gastroenterology. But in five years, Jen-Hsun Huang said, AI should also be able to pass any test. By other definitions, however, Jen-Hsun Huang said AGI could be much farther away because scientists still disagree on how to characterize the human mindset. So it's hard to realize as an engineer," he said, because engineers need clear goals.
Jen-Hsun Huang also answered a question about how many chip factories are needed to support the expansion of the AI industry. According to media reports, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes more chip factories are needed.
Jen-Hsun Huang said more factories are needed, but each chip gets better over time, which limits the number of chips needed. We will need more factories," he said. But keep in mind that we are also constantly improving the algorithms and the processing power (of AI)."
