The agency today sent a letter to Amazon,Microsoft,OpenAIThe FTC filed a 6(b) order against Apple, Anthropic, and Alphabet, seeking information from the companies about recent multibillion-dollar investments and partnerships. The investigation will “examine” these relationships and actions so the FTC can better understand their impact on the competitive landscape.

The companies have 45 days to respond.firstAfter concerns were raised about generating competition in AI, action is being taken swiftly.
“History shows that new technologies can create new markets and healthy competition,” said FTC Chairwoman Lina M. Khan. “As companies race to develop and commercialize AI, we must guard against tactics that would impede that opportunity.”
Microsoft issued the following comment on the investigation, from Rima Alaily, corporate vice president of its Competition and Markets Regulation Group: “The United States is already leading the world in AI because important American companies are working together. Partnerships between independent companies like Microsoft and OpenAI, and many others, are fostering competition and accelerating innovation. We look forward to providing the FTC with the information it needs to complete its study.”
