March 18th.OpenAI be in charge ofafter-trainingLiam Fedus, vice president of research, has announced that he is leaving the company to start an artificial intelligence startup focused on materials science.
1AI noted that Fedus released a statement on the X platform saying, "My undergraduate degree was in physics, and I've always aspired to apply AI techniques to this field." He also mentioned that since AI in the sciences is one of the most strategic areas for OpenAI to realize General Artificial Intelligence (AGI).OpenAI plans to invest in and partner with its new company.
In the emerging field of artificial intelligence for materials science, Fedus's company will be a competitor to the likes of Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and others. In 2023, DeepMind claimed that its AI system, Gnome, had discovered crystals that could be used to make new materials. Recently, Microsoft also launched two materials discovery AI tools called MatterGen and MatterSim.
However, some experts are skeptical that current AI is capable of realizing new scientific discoveries in the true sense of the word.
