Jan. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Google parent company Alphabet Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer, said.USAIn the case of artificial intelligence (AI) The race for development may not remain a race forChinaThe lead.
In an interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Porat noted that the U.S. is leading in AI models and chips, albeit temporarily. But China has equaled, and perhaps even slightly surpassed, the popularity and application of basic capabilities. Porat said, "The U.S. is probably more than a year ahead in AI modeling, and the West is leading in chips. But I think China is already on par with the US in what we call diffusion of basic capabilities, or maybe even a little bit ahead." She emphasized that the U.S. lead in AI is not a "foregone conclusion".
Porat called on the Trump administration to create "bold and responsible" rules for AI development. She said that regulation needs to be consistent across the globe, otherwise fragmented rules will discourage investment. She mentioned that leaders of countries seeking digital transformation have told her that while they prefer to work with the U.S., they will continue to move forward with plans in its absence.
1AI notes that Trump signed a series of executive orders on his first day in office, including rescinding the Biden-era AI regulatory order and suspending the imposition of security and transparency requirements on AI developers. While it is unclear what the new replacement policies will be, it is expected that the new administration will take a more relaxed approach to regulation. Trump has previously criticized Biden's AI regulatory policies for hindering technological innovation.
