Toward a "Universal Application": OpenAI Launches Projects, a Bucket of Functions for a New Interaction with ChatGPT

The Projects feature integrates support for Canvas and the ChatGPT Search network connection, helping ChatGPT move toward its goal of being a "catch-all" app. Kevin Weil, OpenAI's Chief Product Officer, and team members Drew Schuster and Thomas Dimson demonstrate the usefulness of the Projects feature.

Schuster demonstrates how to organize a Secret Santa event using Projects features, including member assignment, wish list management, and mass mailings.

He also demonstrated how to manage appliance maintenance notes using the Projects feature, in one case looking up the replacement time for a refrigerator water filter, while Dimson showed how to modify a personal Web site template in conjunction with the ChatGPT Canvas, among other things.

Users can provide specific commands for each Projects, overriding global commands for finer control. In a single chat, the AI can extract the data stored within Projects and make adjustments or create new forms.

1AI quotes media outlet mashable as saying that the Projects feature is not a major technological breakthrough, but rather focuses on user experience improvements. It brings together the features of ChatGPT to facilitate tasks such as writing, researching, programming, web searching, and lays the foundation for performing multi-step tasks in the future. The feature is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Teams users, and will be available to Enterprise and Education users early in the new year.
