December 10th.General artificial intelligence(AGI) is a frequent topic of discussion for many AI companies, but theappleseems to have a very different view than most companies. In an interview with WIRED, John Giannandrea, Apple's senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy, said that Apple isn't interested in general-purpose artificial intelligence (AGI), and that the goal is unrealistic and a bit reckless.
1AI notes that Giannandrea argues that unlike many of its competitors, Apple is not interested in developing generalized AI, a pursuit that seems unrealistic and almost frivolous to the company. "The most credible researchers in the field believe that there are many unsolved problems and breakthroughs that need to be realized," said Giannandrea, "and the idea that you can scale these technologies to achieve AGI is very naive."
Apple is likely to engage in important breakthroughs, but not to jumpstart the Singularity, but to improve its products, Giannandrea said, adding that "we probably have more engineers working on what we call 'investigative research' than we do working on the products that are going to come out next year, " he said, referring to the company's basic research.
in other words,Giannandrea didn't rule out Apple's involvement in AGI-related breakthroughs, but its ultimate goal is not AGI, but user-oriented productsto improve people's lives. Apple's AI chief thinks some of the common AGI optimism is "very naive".
