Apple considers using Amazon AI chips to pre-train its Apple Intelligence models

Dec. 4 (Bloomberg) - According to CNBC, theappleBenoit Dupin, Senior Director of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, made a surprise appearance todayAmazonWeb Services (AWS) re:Invent Conference.

Dupin revealed that Apple uses customized AI chips from Amazon Web Services in many of its cloud services. Apple is also evaluating using Amazon's latest AI chips to pre-train its Apple Intelligence Model.

Dupin stated thatApple has been using AWS chips for over a decadeThe company's x86 chips, such as Graviton and Inferentia, provide support for services such as Siri, Search, the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Maps, and more. Realizes 40% efficiency gains over x86 chips from Intel and AMD.

Dupin also confirmed that Apple is currently evaluating the latest AWS AI training chip, Trainium2. He said thatApple expects "up to 50% of efficiency gains" when using the Trainium2 chip for pre-training.

but,Apple's use of Trainium2 is limited to the pre-training phase of AI models and will not be used for Apple Intelligence functionality.Apple Intelligence features are powered by chips on Apple devices or Apple Silicon chips on Apple's private cloud computing platform.

1AI notes that earlier this year, Apple also confirmed in a research paper that it used Google's Tensor chips to train its AI models, rather than the Nvidia chips that other companies tend to use.
