Youtube announced Thursday that its Shorts short video Dream Screen feature now lets create AI-generated video backgrounds. Until now, Dream Screen could only create image backgrounds. The new feature was made possible by the integration of Google DeepMind's AI video generation model, Veo, which can create 1080p video clips in a variety of cinematic styles.
Users can now use this feature to turn text prompts into AI video backgrounds. To use this feature, you need to go to the Movie Camera, tap the "Green Screen" icon, and then select "Dream Screen". Here, you can enter a prompt such as "Candy Landscape" or "Enchanted Forest with Brook". Next, you can choose an animation style and click "Create".
The Dream Screen tool will then generate a series of video backgrounds for you to choose from. Once you've chosen your AI video background, you can use it to record a video.
YouTube says the new feature can be used to place users in a favorite scene or create an animated opening for a short film. In the future, YouTube plans to give creators the ability to generate stand-alone video clips up to six seconds in length for short films through Dream Screen.
It's worth noting that YouTube offers short video creators a feature that leading short video platform TikTok does not. While TikTok allows creators to generate AI-powered background images, the company does not currently allow you to create video backgrounds.
This new feature is now available in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
