The move comes at a time when OpenAI is ramping up its efforts to promote ChatGPT's positive role in education. Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has kicked off the generative AI boom and become one of the fastest growing apps in the world.
The introduction of ChatGPT caught teachers off guard as they realized it could be used as a cheating and plagiarism tool, sparking an outcry and a ban issued by many schools.
OpenAI has formed a dedicated team, led by former Coursera executive Leah Belsky, to support the responsible use of AI for education and learning. "My goal is to put AI in the hands of every student and teacher and teach them how to use it responsibly and effectively," Belsky said. "According to Belsky, student adoption of ChatGPT is "very high," and parents are generally supportive, believing that AI skills are critical to future careers.
