LeCun is a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence, winning the Turing Award and currently serving as a professor at New York University and a senior researcher at Meta. He has previously stated on social media that we need to figure out how to design a system smarter than a house cat before worrying about controlling superintelligent AI.
LeCun elaborated in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, responding to a question about AI becoming smart enough to pose a threat to humans by saying, "You'll have to excuse my French, but that's complete nonsense."
LeCun believes thatToday's big models of language lack key "cat-level" capabilities such as persistent memory, reasoning, planning, and understanding of the physical world.He argues that these models only prove that "you can manipulate language, but you're not smart". LeCun doesn't completely deny the possibility of realizing AGI, but he says that new methods will be needed to do so. He noted that the Meta Basic AI research team he leads is working on how to digest real-world video, which could be a promising direction.
