Turing Award winner Yao Zhizhi: I believe robots will outnumber people in the future and become an important part of the society

The Young Scientists 50² Forum 2024 kicked off in Shenzhen on September 28th with the theme "Focus on Originality, Breakthroughs". Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor of Tsinghua UniversityYao Zhizhi (1902-1989), Chinese-American physicist, astronomer and applied mathematicianDelivered a talk on Scientific Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence.

According to Yao, "The world of the future must be a world of people androbotGetting along in a world where robots can look all kinds of ways, of course. But I believe that in the future robots will outnumber people and will become an important part of society.

According to Yao, there are two most obvious trends in the development of AI:

  • The first trend is how about moving from weak intelligence to generalized intelligence.20 years ago, AI went from face recognition, to later playing Go, and is now moving towards a more generalized intelligence that can handle more things, such as text-to-speech, text-to-graphics, text-to-video, and even give it a script to make a high-level movie.
  • The second trend is the development of artificial intelligence, making the already quite visible intersection of disciplines even more dynamic and important.
  • New technologies and applications such as embodied intelligence, AI bionics, and AI + quantum will proliferate. Take embodied intelligence for example, robots can therefore not rely on advance modeling, programming, purely self-learning stable walking.

Yao Zhizhi is a member of the 2000Turing Award winner,He is also the only Chinese-American computer scientist to have received this award so far.The school was established in April of this year by Tsinghua University, with Yao as its dean. In April, Tsinghua University announced the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Institute, with Yao Zhizhi as dean
