September 10Chinese Academy of SciencesThe Research Ethics Board publicly released theIntegrity Alert on Regulating the Use of Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Research Activities" (hereinafter referred to as the "Integrity Reminder") for CAS science and technology staff and students.
In recent years, the rapid development and wide application of artificial intelligence technology has brought new changes and innovations to scientific research, according to an official of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It also poses serious challenges to existing practices that underpin research integrity. For example, the use of artificial intelligence algorithms to falsify data and generate deceptive research papers is very likely to lead to new forms of academic misconduct such as essay writing, plagiarism and plagiarism, and washing of manuscripts, which greatly undermines the credibility of scientific research.
The Integrity Reminder was formed by the Committee on Research Ethics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) after in-depth discussion and research and extensive consultation by organizing experts from inside and outside the academy, focusing on the problems and challenges that may exist in the application of AI technology in the whole process of scientific research activities. There are eight..
This is the seventh consecutive year since 2018 that the Committee on Research Ethics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has issued integrity reminders, focusing on key aspects such as academic review, recommendation of scientific and technological awards, publication of academic results, original records of scientific research, scientific research ethics, and thesis signatures, respectively, to advocate and call for honesty and trustworthiness on the part of researchers.

- In order to standardize the use of AI technologies in research activities, theAvoiding research integrity risks arising from the misuse and abuse of AI technologiesFollowing the principles of honesty, transparency and accountability, the Research Ethics Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), based on the requirements of integrity management of the whole process of scientific research activities, reminds scientific and technological personnel and students of our academy as follows:
- Reminder one:When selecting topics for research, literature searching, and organizing information, we can use artificial intelligence technology to track research dynamics, collect and organize references, and identify the truthfulness, accuracy, and reliability of the information generated by artificial intelligence; we oppose the direct use of unverified research reports, topic selection proposals, and literature reviews generated by artificial intelligence.
- Reminder two:If AI-generated content is used in the preparation of declarations, take responsibility for the content and make a full and truthful statement about its use; oppose the direct use of unverified AI-generated declarations.
- Reminder three:In the collection and use of data, if simulation data, test data, etc., generated by artificial intelligence are used, or if artificial intelligence techniques are used to statistically analyze the raw data, a full and truthful statement of the use should be made; the use of artificial intelligence-generated data as experimental data is objected to.
- Reminder Four:In the production of audio, video and charts, which can be accomplished with the assistance of artificial intelligence technology, the generated content should be labeled and the use of it should be fully and truthfully declared; the use of artificial intelligence to directly generate audio, video and charts is opposed.
- Reminder V:When writing the results, AI technology can be used to assist in organizing existing theories, materials and methods, etc., and language touch-ups, translations, and standardization checks can be carried out; it is opposed to the use of AI-generated content as the core innovative results, and to the use of AI to generate the entire results and references.
- Reminder Six:In peer review, the use of artificial intelligence technology to write peer review comments is opposed, and review information should not be uploaded to a tool platform that is not approved by the review organizer.
- Reminder Seven:If artificial intelligence techniques are used in research activities, the name, version, date and process of use of the tool should be declared in the notes, acknowledgements, references or appendices sections; direct use without declaration is opposed.
- Reminder Eight:When choosing AI technology, service tools that have been filed and registered by the state should be used; oppose the misuse of AI technology to jeopardize data security, infringe on intellectual property rights, and disclose personal privacy.
- All units of the Academy should carry out the necessary education and training based on the above reminder, taking into account the characteristics of their own disciplines and academic practices, and guide scientific and technological personnel and students to use AI technology in a transparent, standardized and responsible manner.
