recent,All Hands AI Announced $5 million in funding led by Menlo VenturesSeed roundFinancingRobert Brennan, co-founder and CEO of All Hands AI, said that as technology develops, programmers' work is increasingly focused on trivial tasks, such as writing unit tests, managing dependencies, and maintaining documentation, and this is exactly where AI can make a big difference.
All Hands AI aims to develop a model-agnostic open source AI agent to help developers reduce these “drudgery” so that they can focus more on creative work.
Brennan mentioned that the Devin AI agent demonstrated by Cognition AI a few months ago was impressive and capable of planning and executing complex engineering tasks, which inspired their imagination, but also made them worried that this technology would be enclosed in a "walled garden" and could not be shared and contributed by the developer community.
therefore,All Hands AI's open source project was originally called OpenDevin, and was later renamed OpenHands. It currently has more than 30,000 stars and more than 150 contributors on GitHub.
OpenHands is envisioned to be a "smart partner" for developers. It not only automates the writing of tests and deployment of applications, but also proactively identifies changes between files during the development process., ask the developer if the relevant code needs to be adjusted.
Joff Redfern, partner at investor Menlo Ventures, said that AI will completely change the way developers work, but developers will still prefer to use open source technology. The openness of All Hands AI will help the software engineering community move towards an ideal AI-driven development experience.
Brennan and his two co-founders have extensive experience in natural language processing and building agent systems. They believe that while tools like Copilot are helpful to developers, they have not yet achieved the full "intelligent coding loop" that they are working towards. Even so, Brennan also acknowledged that developers will still be involved in the whole process for a long time.
Currently, All Hands AI is studying how to provide the best experience for users, and the team plans to integrate with development environments such as VS Code soon. Although they intend to launch paid enterprise-level closed-source features to achieve profitability, their top priority after financing is to improve the technology stack.
