Early this morning Beijing time, Bloomberg News quoted people familiar with the matter as saying:OpenAI CEO Altman plans to build large-scale infrastructure such as machines and systems required for AI. The plan will start in various states in the United States and is expected to costTens of billions of dollars.
Since the beginning of this year, Altman has been seeking U.S. government support for the project — aiming to form a global coalition of investors to finance the expensive physical infrastructure needed to support the rapid development of AI.
The types of projects being discussed include buildingData Center, using turbines and generatorsIncreased energy capacity and transmission, and expanding semiconductor manufacturing, supporters may include investors from Canada, South Korea, Japan and the United Arab Emirates.
OpenAI is also considering involving other private companies in this ambitious project, and Microsoft, OpenAI's largest investor, is expected to be one of the potential partners. Microsoft would not comment specifically on the project, but saidUnderstand this, and is involved in any of the company's broad infrastructure-related efforts.
These discussions come as OpenAI nears a new multi-billion dollar round of financing that would value the company at more than $100 billion. The deal is expected to be led by Thrive Capital.Microsoft, Apple, and Nvidiawill also be involved.
When asked about the company's plans to advance infrastructure, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company believes that building more infrastructure in the United States is critical to further advancing AI and making the benefits of AI widely accessible. The spokesperson added that the company is exploring various opportunities with this goal in mind and looks forward to sharing more details at a later date.
