According to The Information Beijing time this morning,GoogleA message sent to employees shows that Character.AI co-founder and former CEO Noam Shazeer will lead Google AI projects Gemini ofjointTechnical Director.
Chazelle will join longtime Google AI researchers Jeff Dean and Oriol Vinyals in theDeveloping Gemini, whose goal is to compete with OpenAI's large language model GPT.
Earlier this month, startup Character.AI announced that it had signed an agreement with Google's parent company Alphabet to grant the search engine giant a non-exclusive license to use its large language model. Character.AI co-founders Noam Chazelle and Daniel de Freitas will return to Google, and a Google spokesperson announced that Noam would join the DeepMind research team.
This year, there have been several cases of technology giants incorporating the top executives of AI startups into their own teams. Similar "big fish eating small fish" cases include Microsoft spending $650 million to hire the co-founders of AI startup Inflection and dozens of their employees in March this year, and Amazon hiring several co-founders and employees of another artificial intelligence startup Adept in June this year.
