According to foreign media reports, theOpenAIIn "100 Hours of Civil Unrest", Helen Toner, former director of OpenAI, publicly responded to many of the outside world's questions. She said the board firedSam Altman. The reason for this is "lack of trust" and has nothing to do with AI security.
Toner further explained that the board's purpose in firing Oltman was to strengthen OpenAI and make it more capable of achieving its mission. She stated that OpenAI is a very special organization and that the nonprofit mission - to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity - is paramount.
Toner also responded to rumors of a conflict between her and Altman. She said that after the article was published, Altman questioned why she was criticizing the company so publicly, and he then contacted other board members in an attempt to fire her.
However, some board members privately exchanged chats with Altman and discovered that he had provided misleading insights in a discussion with one board member that another board member also thought Toner should leave. And at that point in time, multiple directors were already concerned about Altman's honesty. Bit by bit, his series of actions eroded those members' trust in Altman and ultimately led to his firing.
Toner also said that the conflict between her and Altman was resolved before Altman returned to OpenAI. Altman had already apologized to her for his behavior in the "paper incident".
In addition, Toner has tried to distance herself from the effective altruism movement. She states that the movement and herself have changed considerably in recent years.
