Although the photo may seem ordinary, members of the AI community believe that this may be Altman hinting at a new base model that OpenAI is developing, internally codenamed "Strawberry". This model is believed to be related to the highly anticipatedGPT-5Quite. A blogger on X, @kimmonismus, posted: "What more clues do we need? This could be confirmation of Q*."
Bindu Reddy, CEO of Abacus AI, an open-source AI startup, also saw this as a “reference” to Project Strawberry. She said it was a hint at the inference project that OAI has been rumored to have been working on for more than a year.
Additionally, a new AI model called Anonymous Chatbot has been added to the popular open source LMSYS Arena, adding to the curiosity surrounding Project Strawberry. Early user reports suggest that this new model exhibits more advanced reasoning capabilities than GPT-4o and other competitors, suggesting that it could be even more powerful.
Regarding the "Strawberry" project, Reuters mentioned a new AI model called "Q*" in a report in November 2023, which is considered to be OpenAI's breakthrough in finding artificial general intelligence (AGI). In May 2024, Reuters released another exclusive report saying that OpenAI is carrying out a project code-named "Strawberry" to use novel methods to process its artificial intelligence models.
The goal of the Strawberry project is to enable OpenAI’s AI to not only generate answers to queries, but also to plan ahead, autonomously and reliably browse the internet, and perform so-called “deep research.”
Nearly 17 months have passed since OpenAI released its last major new base model, GPT-4. During this period, although new GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini base models were released, facing competition from Anthropic, Google, Meta, etc., OpenAI needs to continue to innovate to maintain its leading position in the field of AI.
