According to Reuters,South KoreaBeautyThe artificial intelligence (AI) beauty lab of giant AmorePacific has been crowded with customers recently. Here, robots can prepare exclusive foundation according to customers' skin conditions and recommend the most suitable lipstick color for customers.
“Everyone’s skin tone is unique, but usually we can only buy the most common shades on the market. It’s great to know more about my skin condition through AI-generated data and see the before and after comparison with my own eyes!” said 32-year-old customer Kwon You-jin after experiencing the customized skin care service. After receiving an AI-generated skin condition report, a robot then prepared a foundation that perfectly matched her skin tone.
Nowadays, more and more cosmetics companies are embracing AI technology to boost sales. International brands such as L'Oréal and Sephora under the LVMH Group have also used AI to provide customers with customized product recommendations. According to data from market research firm Statista Market Insights, global beauty industry sales (including cosmetics) will reach US$625.6 billion in 2023, and have grown steadily year by year since the pandemic bottomed out in 2020.
AmorePacific said,They use AI to recommend the best options for customers from 205 different foundations and 366 different lip product colors."We transformed the process of experts evaluating large amounts of user skin data into an automated service through deep learning and machine learning technologies," explained Lee Young-jin, a consultant engineer at AmorePacific's custom beauty business.
Analysts point out that using AI instead of human consultants can speed up product development and reduce variables. Yang Yong Suk, chief researcher at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in Korea, who participated in the development of a deep learning model for evaluating the texture of cosmetics, said: "No matter how professional the experts are, the deviation between individuals can be large, and it is difficult to consult 30 to 40 experts to evaluate cosmetics. Nowadays, product development cycles are shortened and more and more new products are launched faster. Incorporating AI technology can further reduce barriers."
The market for AI in the beauty and cosmetics industry is expected to more than double from $3.27 billion in 2023 to $8.1 billion in 2028, as services such as personalized beauty recommendations, skin analysis and diagnosis, and virtual makeup artists develop, the Business Research Company predicted in a January report.
