According to an interview at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Altman mentioned that it will take some time to develop "GPT-5." "We are optimistic at the moment, but there is still a lot of work to do," Altman said.
It is not yet clear when GPT-5 will be released.But Altman said it would be a "significant leap forward.", perhaps compared to its predecessor GPT-4. Previously, Altman had publicly stated that GPT-4 was "a bit bad" and euphemistically called it "a bit embarrassing at best."
Altman further explained: "I hope it will make a big leap forward. GPT-4 often makes a lot of mistakes, such as poor reasoning, and sometimes it completely goes off the track and makes stupid mistakes that even a six-year-old child would not make."
Altman's comments about GPT-5 suggest that the model may still be in the early stages of development. This may be due to complex algorithms, data issues, and the sheer size of GPT-5 itself. Altman likened the development of large language models to the release of the iPhone, "The first iPhone still had a lot of bugs, but it was good enough for people to use."
OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati recently revealed that the company's next-generation artificial intelligence model GPT-5 is expected to be launched at the end of 2025 or early 2026, reaching doctoral-level intelligence in specific tasks, marking that artificial intelligence technology may usher in another major leap.
