Apple software chief Craig Federighi hinted at a deal with Google shortly after the event. There have also been rumors that Apple could strike a deal with Anthropic at some point, though Gurman said a deal with the company could be announced at some point, if not this fall. However, Meta was quickly rejected because its Llama chatbot wasn't good enough, he wrote.
In addition to chatbot integration, Apple is also planning to launch a beta version of Apple Intelligence this fall. Apple reportedly wants to use artificial intelligence as a direct path to profitability, rather than just a set of features designed to drive sales of hardware products. Gurman suggested that Apple "may eventually" launch a subscription-only Apple Intelligence feature. However, it seems that this may be a while, and while Apple Intelligence is currently only available for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, who knows if the initial launch will be enough to drive a large-scale iPhone upgrade cycle.
Gurman noted that Apple will still get at least some AI revenue when users subscribe to services through its AI partners’ chatbots. Third-party AI services could be a good transitional option for Apple while it slowly rolls out its own generative AI systems. For the rest of us, it means more choice, even if in many ways that choice just means variations on algorithmic reconstruction of compressed data.
