Zachariah Crabill reportedly used an AI platform called ChatGPT in a civil case in May, citing precedents he found through the platform. However, the platform generated erroneous and fictitious cases. Crabill allegedly did not report the existence of the erroneous case to the court after filing the motion, nor did he withdraw the motion.

When the judge questioned Crabill about possible inaccuracies, Crabill blamed the error on a legal intern, and at a hearing six days later, he submitted an affidavit explaining that he had used the platform when drafting the motion.
The ruling states that Crabill violated multiple Colorado Bar ethics rules and that if he successfully completes a 90-day suspension and then two years of probation, the remainder of the suspension will be waived.
