According to Musk, Tesla should stock up on NVIDIA's H100 artificial intelligence chip to fuel its transformation into "a leader in artificial intelligence and robotics." During Tesla's earnings call earlier this year, he said the company would increase its H100 acquisitions from 35,000 to 85,000 by the end of the year. Later, in a post on X, Musk said Tesla would spend $10 billion "on co-training and reasoning about AI, the latter of which is primarily used in cars.
But emails from NVIDIA employees obtained by CNBC suggest that Musk exaggerated the purchase of AI chips for Tesla. Instead, many of these processors are now moving to X, primarily its AI subsidiaryxA.
According to CNBC, a December memo from NVIDIA said, "Elon is prioritizing the X H100GPU cluster deployment over Tesla by redirecting 12k of the 12 delivered H100GPUs originally scheduled for Tesla. "In exchange, the original X orders of 12k H100s originally ordered in January and June will be redirected to Tesla. In follow-up news, NVIDIA employees noted that Musk's comments during the earnings call and subsequent posts on X "conflicted with the bookings."
