GoogleIn an interview with BC, Sundar Pichai, CEO of parent company Alphabet, said that if Google finds out that Microsoft-backed OpenAI use Youtube content to train Artificial Intelligence models capable of generating video, Google will take action to address this issue.
The statement comes after OpenAI technical lead Mira Murati said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal in March that she wasn't sure if YouTube videos were part of the training data for the company's S model, which launched earlier this year.
Murati said OpenAI utilized both publicly available data and data that was available for training. The New York Times later reported that OpenAI had transcribed more than a million hours of YouTube video When asked if Google would sue OpenAI if it violated Google's terms of service, Pichai didn't provide specifics.
Pichai said, "It's a question they need to answer. I don't have anything else to add. We do have clear terms of service. Typically, we communicate with companies on these things to make sure they understand our terms of service. That will be addressed."
Pichai said that Google has established a process for determining whether OpenAI is violating regulations. Some newspapers such as the New York Times have slammed OpenAI for allegedly violating copyright laws and training models on their articles.
Pichai's interview comes after a keynote address at Google's I/O developer conference, where Google executives spoke about announcing new AI models, including one called Veo, that can synthesize virtual video. To get early access users will need to be approved by Google.
OpenAI publicized an AI model called GPT-4o on Monday ahead of Google's event, and demonstrated that users of their ChatGPT mobile app will be able to have real voice conversations, interrupting the AI assistant and allowing it to analyze what's in front of the phone's camera. On Tuesday, Google showed similar upcoming features.
Pichai said, "I don't think they've given the demo version to users I don't think it's available in the product." OpenAI said in a blog post on Monday that its ChatGPT Plus subscribers will be able to try out an early version of the new voice model in the coming weeks.Pichai said Google's Project Astra multimedia chat feature launches later this year with the Gemini chatbot.Pichai said:" We had a clear understanding of how to handle it, and we did a good job."
